Weekly Fashion Forecast: Autumn in July

Before I moved to London, my father told me the Dad Joke to end all Dad Jokes: “You’re moving to London, eh? Did you know that summer there last year fell on a Wednesday afternoon?” he chuckled, merrily. I dismissed him, of course, and in the 9 summers since my arrival I have genuinely had a jolly good time in the mild and pleasant English Summers. Apart from this year, my dad’s prophetic Dad Joke came true….we have virtually only had a couple of days of warm weather and yesterday I actually wore BOOTS and a COAT to work. It’s kinda cold, a bit rainy and it feels more like October than July- and I blame you dad! Laughing at my meteorological predicament! Don’t be fooled by the shiny sun-like icon on Friday- all week, any glimmer of sunshine has rapidly given way to shower and gusts of wind. I am not best pleased. Weekly Fashion Forecast: Sunshine & Showers

Just like Daft Punk’s ‘Get Lucky‘ is the sound of the summer (yes every summer!), Sunshine and Showers is the story of every summer in London. I listen to the radio a lot, and I sort of feel bad for the weather reporters who just have to repeat the same forecast every hour for three whole months. The upside, of course, is that I honestly believe that clothes are much more interesting in the summer. It may be because I was born in the Tropics, but winter clothes, even the most glamorous are always a bit utilitarian for simple virtue of the fact that they are primarily intended to keep us warm. I actually think the fashion world agrees with me. We all noticed the open toe sandals and bare legs on display last February in New York Fashion Week, even as Manhattan was ravished by a super snow-storm. That’s because summer clothes are much cooler, even if they leave us feeling much colder. But looking cool is the name of the game at NYFW …
